The War Remnants Museum

Few museums anywhere in the world show the brutal effects of war on its civilian victims so powerfully as the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City. Many of the atrocities documented here were well publicised, but you rarely get the chance to hear victims tell their own stories. While some displays are one-sided, many of the most disturbing photographs illustrating US atrocities are from US sources, including those of the infamous My Lai Massacre.

The Reunification Palace

The Reunification Palace made its name in global history in 1975 when a tank belonging to the North Vietnamese Army crashed through its main gate, ending the Vietnam War. Today, it's a must-visit for visitors to Ho Chi Minh City. It is like a time capsule frozen in 1975. You can even see two of the original tanks used in the capture of the palace parked in the grounds.

Notre Dame Cathedral

Built between 1877 and 1883, Notre Dame Cathedral is a brick, neo-Romanesque church with square towers tipped by iron spires. The interior walls are inlaid with devotional tablets and some stained glass survives.

Tour the Cu Chi Tunnels

Built by the Viet Cong in the 1940s as protection from French air raids during the Indochina conflict, the Cu Chi Tunnels extend underground for more than 155 miles around Ho Chi Minh City alone. This underground network later provided vital access to and strategic control over the rural areas surrounding the city during the Vietnam War, when the tunnels housed living quarters, hospitals, booby traps, and storage facilities for the Viet Cong.
